Job Description

Denmark’s Cooperation and engagement with Afghanistan and International Partners covers political dialogue, security and financial assistance. The Afghanistan Country Programme 2014-2018 (ACP) consists of three Thematic Programmes: (1) Governance, Democracy and Human Rights; (2) Education; and (3) Growth and Employment. The Royal Danish Embassy (RDE) focuses on monitoring and reporting on risk and results (at output and outcome level).

Portfolio

The Senior Political Advisor and Communications Specialist will have a triple role. Firstly, he/she will be responsible for the external communications platforms of the Embassy. Secondly he/she will provide in-depth analysis on the political situation and developments in Afghanistan at a national, sub-national and regional level. Thirdly he/she will support the Defence Attaché. Furthermore, the Adviser may be called on to take part in the administration of relevant development projects. Management of this portfolio may require relevant overseas travel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Communication

  • Responsible for and coordinator of content and process of the Embassy’s public communication on electronic platforms (currently mainly FaceBook and Web Site); i.e. ensure feed of up-do-date news, stories and analysis.
  • Ensure that the communications platforms of the Embassy are alive and up to date.
  • In this respect give technical and other support to other sections of the Embassy to secure frequent and relevant updates.

  2. Political Analysis and Advisory Work

  • In depth analysis and reporting on the political situation and developments in Afghanistan with relation to the national and sub-national levels and report and advise RDE Staff.
  • Follow the work of the Government of Afghanistan.
  • Monitor the security and peace/reconciliation processes taking place and brief RDE staff.
  • Monitor the electoral process and brief RDE staff.
  • Follow the work of the Parliament with a special focus on cases relating to the human rights, anti-corruption, elections, and any other relevant subject.
  • Maintain close contact with key political actors in Afghanistan and facilitate meetings for relevant RDE staff.
  • Monitor the national media – in particular Dari and Pashto language media – and report to relevant RDE staff on new developments.
  • Draft reports/cables on political developments when directed by RDE staff.

  3. Support to the Defence Attaché

  • Monitor and extract defence relevant news and information from open sources.
  • Assist at conferences and other events organised by the Danish Defence.
  • Support in monitoring and reporting activities under the Danish Peace and Stabilization Fund.

Job Requirements:

Master’s degree or an equivalent advanced degree in Political Science, Social Science, Communications, or Journalism from a reputed University or higher educational institution.

  • At least five years of practical experience in political affairs and communications.
  • Strong training and facilitation background in the areas of politics and communications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an understanding of cultural sensitivities.
  • Strong analytical and report writing skills with use of a range of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods.
