Biography of Mr. Nicolaj Petersen

Nicolaj Petersen took up his appointment as the Danish Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in September 2018.

He has previously served as the Head of Department for Technical Quality Support at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as Deputy Head of Department for Africa, a position he assumed after serving as Danish Senior Civilian Representative and Director of PRT in southern province of Helmand in Afghanistan.

Nicolaj Petersen held a number of positions within the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Chief of Staff to the Foreign Minister’s Climate Representative, Deputy Head of Department for Corporate Affairs, Private Secretary to the Danish Foreign Minister and European Correspondent/Foreign Policy Committee Secretary.

From 2003-2006, he was First Secretary at the Danish Embassy in London covering foreign policy and UK development aid policies. Prior to his posting to London, he was part of the team responsible for preparing and negotiating the EU enlargement.

Nicolaj Petersen joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the beginning of 1999, responsible for Danish development assistance to West Africa.

He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science/Internationals Relations from Copenhagen University.

Nicolaj Petersen is married and the father of three children.
