The Danish military has helped building the capacity of the Afghan National Army and Afghan Police, in order to increase security and stability in the country. Furthermore the Danish military have supported reconstruction and development, and conducted combat operations to increase security in the Helmand Province.
Denmark has supported free and fair elections in Afghanistan and the establishing of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), to encourage the development of a fairer and more representative Afghan society. Denmark has also made efforts to encourage the development of a pluralistic civil society, where everyone is encouraged to participate. Also, Denmark has contributed to developing the capacities of ministries and the public sector
Denmark has been a part of raising the number of children attending school in Afghanistan from 900,000 in 2001, to more than eight million today, by offering significant support to the construction of schools, development of the curriculum and the provision of more than 44 million textbooks.
Denmark has supported projects to improve health, water supply, sewerage, agriculture, and education in Afghanistan as well as contributing to loans used to establish small businesses. Five million people have today gained access to safe drinking water raising the proportion of people with access from a mere 13% in 2002, to 36% today. Denmark has also contributed to raising levels of public health through hygiene and nutritional training.
Denmark has contributed to clearing an area the size of Greece (132,000 km2) from landmines and training thousands of Afghan mine-sweepers. Denmark has also supported the re-integration of five million refugees that have returned to Afghanistan, as well as contributing to the mitigation of humanitarian crises through UN organizations such as UNICEF and UNHCR.
